Link Flocking.

Had to chuckle today as I was scrolling through my feeds and saw an article on a great new link building idea – “linking through content generation”. The author talked about this new concept, and explained (in the most basic of ways) how distributing content will “secure a large number of high-quality links” .
I don’t want to be a killjoy here, but there’s nothing new about the concept of having great content to link to or using content to link with. “Content is king” and “use articles and press releases to secure links” predates “linking through content generation”. The concept is sound, but I take exception to the idea this tactic is new and the holy grail of link building.
It’s not and it’s not. I’m not knocking the idea or saying you won’t get links with this method (you will) I’m just saying it’s not a new concept. If you’ve been writing articles, sending out media releases, distributing white papers, DIY tutorials or working the testimonial angle, you’ve been doing the content generation thing all along.
And quite frankly – I don’t like the new name – “linking through content generation” any more than “content is king”. Let’s call it something catchy like link flocking. Now there’s a name….
