Ahrefs –  Large index of links updated every 15 minutes, friendly interface with data analysis.  Tool shows links (including new and internal), linking domains, anchors and best pages of a domain.

Buzzstream –  Outreach management and link prospect tool, collects information such as PageRank™, email address, social information and contact forms.Plans start $29/month.

Citation Labs – Offers two (2) link building tools, Link Prospector and the Broken Link Tool.

  • Link Prospector – searches for and returns potential partner sites based on provided criteria.  Great for finding sources to host your content.
  •  Broken Link Tool – discovers broken link prospects based on your keywords.

Advanced Link Manager –  Helps manage link building campaigns, monitors link profiles and find link opportunities.

Majestic SEO - Has the largest link index/database available.  Site Explorer, Backlink History tool (shows backlink discovery by month) and Clique Hunter (shows who are linking to your competitors) are three standout link building tools and part of the overall SEO tool package.  Plans start at $49.99 a month.

Ontolo – Collects, organizes and prospects for content sources.  Good video tutorials and general link building articles onsite.  Subscriptions begin $47/month, offers annual rate at discount.

Open Site Explorer (f^ee) Crawls the web and analyzes  a small number of  inbound and outbound links, calculates their proprietary domain and page authority and offers to compare data to five (5) additional URL’s. Upgraded information and more results with paid subscription.

Link Research Tools -While there are 20 SEO and link building tools in this toolbox, 15 of them are directly related to link building.  The Link Detox (shows risky links), SERP Prospector and Competitive Link Velocity (measures link growth) are three standouts.  Subscriptions start at $129/month.

SEOBook SEO for Firefox Extension (f^ee)  – If you want to know why Google or Yahoo! ranks a page the way it does, this Firefox extension can help, it pulls useful market research data right into Google and Yahoo’s search results.  Data points shown:  PageRank™, age, list of .edu and .gov links, Alexa rank, how many pages are cached in Google, Whois and if the site is listed in DMOZ.

SEOBook also offers what I think is one of the best link building tools online, The Hub Finder:

  • SEOBook Hub Finder:  A web-based co-occurrence tool, Hub Finder finds pages linking to common sources.  If you want to know why a page ranks the way it does, this tool will show which webpages are pointing to competing sites.  (premium membership required)

LinkRisk – A backlink analysis and profiling tool used to algorithmically assign a risk score for each link pointing to your site.  Integrates with Majestic, Moz, Ahrefs and GWT. Plans start at $249/month.

Link Diagnosis – generates backlinks, works best in Firefox, shows inbound links and top anchors being used, can filter by PageRank™

Backlink Watch – My go-to backlink checker when I’m on the road/not on my desktop.  Shows inbound links, nofollow attributes, PageRank™ scores and hypertext anchors.

Rank Signals – Backlink checker, shows PageRank score for page being checked, number of unique inbound links, Alexa rank and anchor text used.  Quick and clean-looking.
